Scholarly Communication Initiatives

A guide designed to assist with understanding key concepts of Scholarly Communication including Open Access, scholarly publishing, and copyright.

What are Transformative Agreements (TA)?

Transformative Agreements (or Read and Publish Agreements) are contracts between institutions (libraries) and publishers that allow users to read and publish through scholarly journals. The contracts enable authors to publish in open-access scholarly journals without paying article processing charges ( or APC). Authors can retain the article's copyright instead of transferring the copyright to the publishers.

Transformative agreements play a vital role in the shift from traditional paywalled journals to fully open-access scholarly journals.
