Scholarly Communication Initiatives

This guide aims to assist you in sharing your work with the global scholarly community.

What is Scholarly Communication?

The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) defines scholarly communication as “the system through which research and other scholarly writings are created, evaluated for quality, disseminated to the scholarly community, and preserved for future use. The system includes both formal means of communication, such as publication in peer-reviewed journals, and informal channels, such as electronic listservs."

Rowland Medical Library supports the scholarly communication initiative by striving to make information accessible to all. This is accomplished by supporting open access and scholarly publishing for students, residents, and faculty. The library works with several academic publishers to explore open access agreements that support access to scholarly literature and fee-paid publishing opportunities.

Rowland Medical Library also promotes works created by UMMC  authors through UMMC's institutional repository, UMMC Digital Collections. The institutional repository provides access to the scholarly works of the UMMC community.
